HA! Great story! I KNOW Beth! She’s a writer I’ve worked with often. Great lady, and no pushover, tough as nails (as you can tell from the story). Total Brooklynite – not easily intimidated, plenty of street smarts.
My son had his bike stolen in similar fashion many years ago (in Park Slope, btw). When I got home from work, we went around to see if we could find the guy that ripped it off. Turns out one of my kid’s friends TOOK the bike back from the THIEF and gave it to the cops! We went over to the police station and described the bike, and the cops bought it out and gave it to my son! Amazing! I’ve had several of my own bikes stolen and never got even one back.
“But what’s the point of having a bike if you can’t ride it? I’m raising my children in a city, but I refuse to give in to urban realities, which unfortunately include crime. My kids will walk to school alone. They will take the subway. And darn it, they will ride their bikes!”
Kudos to the mom!

Eeesh – Julia Roberts.
I was just happy to read the story; once stolen bikes are usually gone forever.
