So the nicest grocery store the Daily New can find in “downtown” Brooklyn is Key Food on Montague St. in Brooklyn Heights (not downtown!). Who on the other side of Court St is going to schlep over there to shop? Is that really the closest decent grocery since the one in Concord Village closed? what about the new on on Schermerhon (or is is Livingston)? Or is that too “fancy”?
none of you apparently enjoyed the car-free Vanderbilt Ave these past 4 Sunday afternoons in Prospect Heights – it was a lot of fun.
Not a sausage vendor in sight, but instead the local merchants bringing their stores out to the streets, lots of mixing and mingling, and a very pleasant atmosphere.
Bikes passed through on the bike path relatively unimpeded – sure, they had to slow down, but they fit into the flow of things nicely.
Just a really nice time, and a great use of the streetspace…

this car free jazz is one big ugh!
who cares if you can walk in the street during the summer – I mean really folks, really? This is a “fun” way to spend your summer? – go to the friggin beach for crissakes!
is there a term for this hyperfixation people have on any event that involves bikes, and need to villify it?
It’s true, in Manhattan cyclists are the bullies. Bikes can be deadly too, I had a relative that was actually in a coma after getting hit by a bike ridden my a mentally retarded person. That said, it’s good the city’s encouraging bikes as a cleaner way to get around. The what’s right though, you usually waste more fuel getting around these “green” spaces than if the street wasn’t closed. Where’s the highway infrastructure? We should be the world’s #1 in basic urban infrastructure before we’re first in anything else. That would be like putting the cart before the horse.

Sounds to me like a feel-good measure to win favor of certain people. Keeps people away from real issues facing this city and King Mike’s iron fisted over-turning term limits coup.
dibs, i saw this on lafayette (i believe) last year. people were mostly fine, police would stop the flow to let others cross. there were bikers, walkers, joggers, strollers. for the large numbers involved, and to see nothing happen for the whole time i was there, is a testament to the success. sure there’s a douche now and then, so what. theyre in cars and on sidewalks too. again, if people are so pissed about an event of 18 cumulative hrs out of the year, stay home or avoid the route. its a big city. i drive and manage to have no issues with these events.
why do i take the bait. sigh.
a) august saturdays are pretty quiet in the city, this isnt monday morning rush-hour
b) 7am-1pm only, on saturday. sleep in late if its such an inconvenience.
the one thing im surprised you didnt notice is this is actually a covert way to keep down minorities. muaahaahaa.
