  1. Oldtimers who grew up in Flatbush say “I grew up in Flatbush” and absolutely never say Ditmas Park. I think the word Flatbush rules and needs to be rebranded like the Lower East Side or East Village were…Good or bad. Sadly, Ditmas Park while a misnomer, is currently in first place. Actual Manhattanites know the name Ditmas Park, 2 years ago, all you got was a blank stare and an open mouth.

  2. Mmmmm… my favorite can o’ worms!

Yes this shot is Albemarle Road in Prospect Park South… not Ditmas Park. Unfortunately, in my view, Ditmas Park is gaining traction as the name for all of Victorian Flatbush. First a simple misnomer by the New York Times, then picked up by the real estate brokers, now the Cortelyou Road merchants are using it… most likely because it is the easiest of the 11 nabes to say. For me Ditmas Park will always be a part of the set, not the whole.

    So here are my recommendations:

    1) Victorian Flatbush (some say this is elitist???, but we’re talking about architectural characteristics, not social mores)
    2) Flatbush (some say too big?)
    3) West Flatbush (We’ve got an East Flatbush, why not west?)
    4) SOPA (South of Prospect Park)
    5) ASOPP (Area South of Prospect Park)
    6) NOAH (North of Avenue H)
    7) South Park (Imagine the fun!)

Please add yours to the list and maybe brownstoner can open it up to voting.

  3. You say bill is twice as much… but is that just the $ figure — or is meter showing increased usage.
My bills are up some but I think it is higher rate not usage.
I pay about $115 per quarter. Less than $500 per year. 3 unit house – but with only 5 people living in it.

  4. The article regarding the city’s water bills caught my eye. I’ve notice that my bill/usage has increased dramitically each quarter. My bills are basically double the amount they were a year ago when we bought the house although our usage should be pretty consistent – there are only three of us in the house.

  5. Technically, it’s Prospect Park South. Wouldn’t mind hearing other people’s thoughts on what the neighborhood should be called generally. Flatbush? That’s what it is. PPS, DP are useful terms architecturally and historically speaking, but do they really reflect the integrated character of the area that stretches from Caton to Avenue H, East 23rd through Coney Island Ave?
