Last night we caught sight of some serious tree damage at 5th Avenue and Union Street in Park Slope, and a reader sent in a few extra pictures earlier this morning. We’re guessing it was caused by the storm that passed through on Sunday, and luckily none of the storefronts were damaged. Did anyone see it go down?

  1. Why plant trees that are beautiful but vulnerable to damage like this? Is this all that N.Y.C.’s gov’t has to offer in its Million Tree program? When I see the trees that line some blocks in Bedford-Stuyvesant – they add such value to the neighborhood and apparently took many years to grow – I wonder where our priorities lie. Does the City offer a wide range of trees or only a few types?

  2. That’s exactly it, Minard. In fact many of the Bradford trees along 5th Avenue (most of upper 5th are these trees) look a little worse for wear and have had limbs come down (the ones in front of Key Food on 5th are just SAD).

When they are in top form though, they have a very nice shape to them. I saw a particularly beautiful speciman this morning on my way to work.
