This is super sad. I was excited to see my block in this picture, and then embarrassed to see two comments complaining about how shoddy my building is. It’s 65 S. Portland with the For Rent sign, and it is in AWFUL shape on the outside. It is a rent-controlled building, and the landlord, I think, keeps it in bad condition to drive out the tenants so he can renovate the apartments and charge higher rent. The tenants have turned down buyouts to move out, many of them have been there for years and don’t want to leave. Anyone have suggestions on how the landlord can be pressured into cleaning things up? Tenants have had to call the sanitation department on their own building more than once. Any ideas? The owner’s company is called Kensington Realty. Maybe the neighbors should get together and do something. It’s a beautiful building, just needs a lot of attention.
Yes, the brownstone with the “For Rent” sign in front is in need of some repair. I agree. It could use a little investment. I think it must be rented by an absentee landlord but I could be wrong. I’m not particularly offended by the sign but wouldn’t mind seeing some money spent on the building facade.
BHO,
I had a look at the map in the article about foreclosures. It appears the area mapped out as “Fort Greene/Brooklyn Heights” includes other neighborhoods, notably all of Clinton Hill, Vinegar Hill, everything all way to the water bordered on the east by Bedford Avenue. That’s a huge area and there are some ramshackle, distressed properties around. If the tally broke out the FG and BH Landmarked area only, I think the number would be much, much lower if not at zero…but I could be wrong…
best block in ft. greene!!!
Hey BrooklynGreene agree that’s a nice picture of THE block here in Brooklyn and all of New York. But what do you think of that ugly For Rent sign in front of building # 61? Crass and tacky IMO…is it even allowed? ( at risk of being called a Nazi communist:)
Foreclosures up dramatically since 2007 in Fort Greene/Brooklyn Heights but down since 2007 in Bed Stuy, according to last link. What gives?

A “Licycle” Lane is a the lane for bicycle riders who are pathological liars. Riding in that lane is Step 7 in their 12 step program.
Its one used by kids infested with nits.
What’s a “Licycle” Lane? 😉 I’ve always heard that car drivers block bicycle lanes.
That’s a nice bright, sunny photo of South Portland seen from Lafayette. Thanks! I haven’t seen a decent photo of Fort Greene on here recently (at least none that I remember).
