  1. And yes Bxgrl is 100% correct. There are thousands of calls every year where EDP’s are taken into custody and transported to the hospital to receive the care that they so desperately need without incident. So that never makes the news. Cops are not mental health professionals but are pushed into that capacity because of the lack of available services for those in need. EDP and Domestic Violence calls are the worst because you are damned if you do and you are damned if you don’t!

  2. Cops are trained to shoot to kill. Period. There is a “Use of Force” continuim. Once that officer has determined that the the threshold to use deadly force has been met – and in this case it seems as though it was because they were faced with deadly force – the knife & the open gas burners with the threat of liting a match – they shoot to kill. The training is to shoot center mass so that as many vital organs as possible are hit. No one has ever been trained to shoot in the knee to stop a perp. Through the years the Department has adopted various other tools that can be used like chemical agents, nets, etc… but ultimately if the Departmental and more important New York State CPL was followed then the shooting will be justified.

What can be improved is the intel collected before going on a job of this nature. The landlord made several complaints in the days leading up to this stand-off. It appears as though she may have been an EDP (Emotionally Disturbed Person)and if that is so, the whole situation might have been handled differently from the first call made not the least of which would be not sending a rookie.

Although a more experienced officer may have been able to handle this situation differently and maybe not. I do know that the second that you hesitate when faced with deadly force is the second that you might lose your life. The saying goes that we’d rather be “tried by twelve than carried by six.”

  3. i disagree- I’m channelling my kinder, more gentle self this morning 🙂

But in all honesty, I wish people tried to understand the NYPD a little more. I have the greatest respect and admiration for these guys- I’ve met quite a few, and I’ve seen how badly the stress and trauma can affect them. They’re only human- like all of us.
