  1. I’d have expected a lot more discussion on the “Dwindling Middle Class” article.
Maybe should have been featured item not just one of Thursday connections.

  2. Oh Lord!,

You MIGHT be able to make an argument for these parking permits in a few areas, such as Bklyn. Hts., but, as is evident from the article, there would be tremendous pressure to issue them all over which would lead to the situation you describe in DC.

  3. Bob, you hit the nail on the head. I lived in Washington, DC for several years and couldn’t drive my car because although I could park it outside of my house, I couldn’t park it anywhere near where I needed to be every day. The subway didn’t run nearby so my only option was a long meandering bus ride, or drive near the subway and then subway and bus. It was a nightmare. I was never so happy as to get back to the jungles of BK where parking is every man for himself.

  4. 1–RE: “Morrone Tour of Grand Army Plaza
6/29”, if you scroll up a few items, you’ll see a MAS walking tour of PLG this Sunday @ 11 AM–a good chance for people to get an introduction to this nabe which, for reasons I can’t fathom, seems to generate a lot of controversy. I plan to be there, covering it for the LM Echo and Planet PLG. I’ll TRY to keep my mouth shut 🙂

2–RE: Parking permits; I wonder if drivers who advocate these ever plan on driving outside of their own neighborhoods? If so, where do they plan on parking. IMO this seems like a recipe for automotive immobility.

  5. I question the value of studies like the one reported in the NYT as the most recent data being analysed was gathered for the 2000 census. Its at least 7 years stale.

  6. Reading the NYTimes article on shrinking middle class– If low/very low neighborhoods now make up 30% of city I wouldn’t be so worried about gentrification spreading everywhere.
And who’d have guessed that it is StatenIsland as the most ‘gentrified’ even more than Manhattan.

  7. How does this work for other neighborhoods, such as Cobble Hill or Carroll Gardens? I regularly can’t find a spot near my building so I end up parking in Boerum Hill. On the other hand, the guest permits are pretty nice.

  8. why would anyone living in downtown with one car or less be AGAINST residential parking permits?

I can’t think of any reason to be against it other than: you park away from meters so that you can drive into the area for your job/shopping/partying and leave your car there all day/night/week.
