"The Weirdest Juxtaposition" on State Street
A reader sent in this picture of the “weirdest juxtaposition I have ever seen” at the State Street and Columbia place. We’ve never noticed it before and are curious to know what the story is behind both structures. The old house on the left looks straight out of a movie set, doesn’t it?

Here is the old thread? Is it the same house? Odd, because it doesn’t look like the same building to the left.

Does anyone live in the decaying structure to the left? There is more of the modern building to the far left of the semi-ruin, as if the more recent structure was built to wrap around the older one. PS: BTW, what’s going on with all the empty stores at Columbia and Joralemon?
Didn’t realize the Times was paying so well these days!
The modern house on the right was once owned by Richard Nixon’s lawyer. His wife supposedly killed herself in the house. The interior is absolutely chilly. Think Ice Storm. Was listed at $4m. Current owner is a reporter for the NYT.
There WAS an extensive article about it recently, I remember reading about the family and seeing photos of the inside. NY Times R.E. section?
the modern one is for sale through corcoran…$3.7 million…
Indeed. Different but similar.

Believe you are thinking of this house on Willow Street: http://brownstoner.com/brownstoner/archives/2005/05/modern_in_the_h.html
Hmmm. Isn’t the house on the right a structure that you actually featured several months ago? I’m not sure but something about the windows/garage/entry looks familiar to me and I recall spirited conversation regarding whether or not the structure was appropriate for the street. I seem to remember a link to a broker site and floorplans that were actually pretty cool. In any case, seeing it next to the truncated plantation is indeed qutie a shock.
