The Honeymoon's Over at Fujiya
All good things must come to end. All good things must come to end. Since Fujiya opened at 437-9 Court street (between 3rd and 4th Place) in Carroll Gardens about a year ago, we’ve been eating large servings of sushi at rock bottom prices. True, their rolls (pictured above) aren’t quite as appetizing as Osaka’s or Cube 63’s but when you’re on a budget, sushi rolls that cost $2.75 and don’t cause food poisoning are (or at least were) an irresistible deal. We hate to complain about Fujiya’s increased prices because they’re still pretty cheap the shrimp tempura roll is now $4, and the futomaki is $3.75 but we were bummed when yesterday’s lunch unexpectedly cost 13 bucks. Can anybody recommend another good lunch deal in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill?
Just checked the Health Department web site for fun and was horrified about the Health Department Inspection ratings of some of my favorite neighborhood restaurants.
Keep in mind that the average violation point total in New York City is: 13
The Grocery, famed Zagat top 10, on Smith Street: Total of 24 points
Sapodila on Smith: score of 25
Pioneer bar in Red Hook: score of 41
Fushimi on Court: score of 57
And last, but not least:
Osaka : score of 68
One of the cleanest was Frankie’s on Court.
I am sure my fellow Carroll Gardners would like to know.
Pass the info along
EM Thai on Sackett and Smith has a $7.00 lunch special that is fresh and filling…and the bodega/deli on Hoyt and Atlantic has some great Mexican food…
Also, if you don’t mind venturing up to Montague and Clinton (I think – maybe Henry), The Green’s have great lunch specials, and for $6 including tax. Excellent vegetarian Chinese food. My favorite is the General Tso’s Soy Gluten.
its an obvious suggestion, but i am addicted to nectar on court– their sandwiches are super yummy and extremely filling, and the make your own salad is pretty fairly priced.
i know zaytoons is everyone’s fave, but i’d also encourage checking out the middle eastern place on hicks street just off of atlantic. there’s no charm, but (and i know this might be sacriligous) i think their falafel is better than zaytoon’s– its super fresh…
I’ve never heard anything good about Fujiya’s food (and I lived a couple of blocks from it for a while). Plus it has all the atmosphere of a cafeteria. We were surprised it lasted as long as it has. Doesn’t Mezcal’s have lunch specials?
If you’re willing to walk a little, the bodega/deli on Hoyt and Atlantic makes incredible tacos- 3 for 6 bucks and has a nice garden in the back. Also, Sahadi’s prepared food counter has a $6 a pound lunch combo deal that is pretty excellent.
Hanco’s Bubble tea & Vietnamese sandwich at 85 Bergen, between Smith and Hoyt sts. sandwiches are $4.25 and delicious.
I love love Zaytoons at 283 Smith St. at the corner of Sackett. You can get a delicious and very filling Falafel sandwich for $4.00.
