Come out and sculpt this Saturday, August 15, at Coney Island’s 25th Anniversary sand sculpting competition! The annual contest of sand castles (Brooklyn’s most under-appreciated real estate) will be open to amateurs and semi-professionals of all ages, to earn cash prizes (and bragging rights).

Coney’s contest is nationally recognized, and past events have attracted sand artists from around the world. The contest often brings in some 3,000 to 4,000 local attendees. It’s a fun event, a good cause, and a reason to take a trip out to Coney.

The competition, first held on January 1, 1990, will be sponsored by 149-year-old local community development organization Brooklyn Community Services as well as Coney Island nonprofit Astella Development Corporation.

All sponsorship money raised by the event — in addition to any donations — will be put towards ongoing rebuilding efforts to counter Superstorm Sandy devastation.

For more information, check out the competition’s official Facebook page.
