When a cute coffee place opens in an area that doesn’t have one, that’s news in real estate circles, so we sent our new Bed Stuy correspondent Rachel Chang out for a look.
The T-Cup, on 627 Throop Avenue, finally opened its doors on Tuesday, about a month behind schedule. Owner Tanya Brown (her partner is Reginald Durham) was an accountant when she moved to Bed-Stuy two years ago, and found herself in the ridiculous predicament of driving to Clinton Hill for muffins. Instead of bitching and whining about it, she did something about it. T-Cup is a small, airy space. Only 4 two-seater tables and a counter, but its good strong coffees ($1.35 for large), muffins ($1.65), homebaked cookies and 7am-7pm opening hours should be enough for those wanting a Tiny Cup in South Stuy. A small menu with paninis, cold sandwiches, smoothies and fresh salads. A fair amount of vegetarian options, and no heavy meats. They were out of panini bread when I ordered mid-afternoon, but made the turkey, pesto and mozzarella sandwich on toast instead. Not dirt cheap ($5.50 for the sandwich) but fresh and tasty. Inviting and clean, with returning customers already on the third day of business.

I’m so glad this has opened, the hours sound fantastic. That’s really the big problem with a lot of new places that open. I used to live by Fulton and Washington were a smoothie place opened up. Perfect for breakfast on my way to the subway I thought. Nope! Alway opened late and wondered why they didn’t stay in business (there’s a dominican hair spot there now. I now live closer to this new place and can’t wait to try it out!
I’ll tell you why she had to go to Clinton Hill for muffins! Because of all the lovely new (and old) coffee houses in all of Bed Stuy, none of them open before 9am on a weekend. And when they say 9am, they mean 9:15 or so. Welcome to the neighborhood, T-Cup! See you at 7:01 and hope you’re ready for me!
Thanks, Amzi. You even had the addresses!
There is also a little place on Malcolm X and Putnam. I think the name is 254 Cafe.
Bred Stuy for one. It is on Lewis. There is also one on Thompkins Avenue, a little further north of this place.
Common Grounds 376 Tompkins Ave about 5 blocks from this location and
Bread-Stuy 403 Lewis Ave about 2 blocks from this location. Not sure why she had to go to Clinton Hill….
They couldn’t be that close if the owner had to go to Clinton Hill for a muffin! Which ones are you thinking of, Amzi Hill?
The place is nice.. the owners are welcoming and very nice.. I have been there twice already. much needed for the area. But This area of South Bedford Stuyvesant has two other coffee houses Brownstoner
