A new produce market, a kosher one nonetheless, is setting up shop at 724 Myrtle Avenue in that neighborhood no-man’s land that’s technically Bed Stuy but doesn’t really feel like it. “Even if it ends up being bootleg version of Mr. Kiwi’s, I’m OK with that,” writes the Bed Stuy Blog. “There really aren’t any decent produce markets in the area, so I believe that this place should do some decent business.”

  1. DIBS,
However there is inherently nothing kosher about produce.
The reason for the store to list Kosher on the sign is to let the religious know that they are stocking “non-traif” merchandise. Typically you would pay more for koshered meats or a store that is observant of the sabbath (closed on Friday sundown to late Saturday.)

If you’ve ever been to Rossman Farms on 3rd Avenue (and 26th?) and their Avenue M shop, you’ll note that the two stores have similar prices and merchandise. The Avenue M store, which is located in the midst of Midwood is closed on the sabbath.

  2. Yeah, I never understood what a Newton was except for the physics newton as a measure of force. One would have expected other newton-followons: strawberry Newtons, oreo newtons, etc. Why hasn’t Ben & jerry’s done a fig newton ice cream????
