Bad luck for anyone who hoped to visit the new bail bonds office across the street from the House of Detention sometime in the next few weeks: According to a sign on the door, the business is closed until next year. No explanation was given for the closure, but we suspect there’s a group of homeowners in the area that won’t be mourning the loss.

  1. I am a resident in the Smith Condo, and we were not told in advance that the Bail Bondsman would be our tenant. At our first condo meeting two months ago, the Sponsor and the owner of the Bail Bonds office both got sudden amnesia when asked about the terms/length of the lease.

Most of the residents don’t object to the business itself, but rather to the awful aesthetic of the office. The neon signs, piles of junk, college dorm furniture, etc. Just to clarify, the bail bonds office in the area are a function of the court house, not the prison.

  2. If you bought a “luxury” condo (whatever you may think that means) across the street from the HOD, down a block or two from a pawn broker. near several bail bondsmen, and around the corner from a 24×7 criminal court and thought that the neighborhood was going to change because you moved it, you are more than delusional.

That said, no e of the above-noted things is a detriment to the quality of life in the neighborhood (except for the correction officers taking parking and not moving their cars for weeks at a time).

  3. The reason why you’d expect objections is because like Pawn shops, check cashing locations and liquor stores (real ones – not Wine stores) – these kinda retail establishments tend to signal bad neighborhood, and if you just bought a multi-100 thousand dollar condo upstairs, you are likely not to pleased to see this – nor am I guessing is the hotel operator who is trying to create an upscale image for his guests.

  4. It is an eysore, unnecessary to have at store level, a slapdash operation run by someone with no sensitivity to the surrounding community. The reason he is temporarily closed is that he has no business – otherwise he be running 24/7.

  5. I agree with bx, Chris and johnny. Why is this news? As chris pointed out, if the client could go into the bb office, the client, by definition, would not need to. WHy would you want this office anywhere other than right by jail?

  6. Lived on State down from prison for 12 years. Not one single problem from prison, bail bondsmen, visitors or related. Not the most aesthetically attractive business I guess but much ado about nothing to say least.
