I needed some new summer stuff recently, and out of curiosity checked some of the ladies’ clothing boutiques along 7th Ave., figuring with the recession and all there might be some sales. I was staggered by the prices, frankly. The place next to the camera store across from Citibank, for instance, had a cute white t-shirt “marked down” from $70 to $50. It had a nice drape and cut, admittedly, a step up from Old Navy, but…it was a white cotton t-shirt. (Oh, and it had a very indie label.) $150 sundresses, $12 socks, $80 jeans, all very indie. And nowhere was there another living soul trying on or buying anything, just lissome young salesclerks whiling away their time in empty shops. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see more boutiques follow in the steps of this one; I’m amazed so many are still in business. (Somebody must still be getting bonuses.)
(BTW, I got 5 lovely silk-knit Ann Taylor tops for $100 in an outlet store…not very indie of me, but I’m afraid that’s my price point.)
hahahah i oftentimes get mistaken for being straight 🙁

“silk shirts in the summer? Isn’t it a bit hot to be wearing that?”
NO! VERY sheer silk shirts. Very summery.
“i dont know why but now i keep picturing ENY with a cane and a pimp hat.”
No cane, no pimp hat. I may be from Brooklyn but I don;t fit that mold! I’ve been told I look like Don Cheadle (recently) and Eddie Murphy (years ago). I’m also the kind of guy who is sometimes mistaken for being gay (neat, thin, well dressed).
Gilt is good, i forgot am a member
I like Barney’s and Saks. Bloomies is amazing!
oh sorry – are we discussing women’s clothes
Tyburg,
It was announced recently that Nordstrom Rack is taking over the Virgin Megastore location at Union Square.
And you’d be shocked if you went to Bloomingdales. Their men’s store is VERY updated and modern in terms of the selection and it’s all been recently remodeled as well.
It’s 1000 times better than Nordstrom, in my opinion.
Bloomingdales?! Really. I thought they only had high-collared clothing for the wives of landed gentry? I don’t think I could ever shop at Bloomingdales.
I really like Nordstrom’s… why don’t they have any in the city? I miss that store. (Used to live in the NW for a time)
Gilt Groupe is the best thing since sliced bread.
That, Barney’s (mostly co-op) and sometimes Century 21 are the only places I find non-vintage clothing I like. Oh, and once in a while Bloomingdales. Outside the city, Loehmans has some nice stuff, but the one here in Manhattan sucks.
And Rob, this is brownstoner. No “real men” around here. 🙂
