Streetlevel: Il Torchio Out, Anima In on Myrtle Avenue

As several tipsters alerted us to (and Clinton Hill blog reported), Il Torchio, the upscale Italian restaurant that opened last summer on Myrtle but never seemed to hit its stride, closed last week and was seamlessly replaced by a new restaurant that is being called Anima. We stopped by yesterday and spoke to the landlord, who also used to run Il Torchio, and the new owner. Turns out that it was just too much running a real estate business and a restaurant. As for the man behind the new spot, he used to run a place on Smith Street. We didn’t catch which one.
We just stopped by Anima last night and the owners and waitstaff were SO friendly! Yes, the owners are definitely not new to the restaurant biz and are really hoping the new, less expensive menu (than the former Il Torchio) will attract more patrons. We hope so too! After having their antipasto tray and a couple of glasses of wine, we already feel like family and will definitely be there a few times a week!
Anima means soul in Italian
My only concern–and I say this despite my fond intention to eat here–is the name. The first association I got was “animus.” My second was “anemic.” The third involves colonic irrigation…
Nice–it’s probably the owner’s daughter’s name or something.
Il Torchio was delicious and the space is gorgeous, but it was a little pricey. Hopefully this place will build an audience and won’t be too expensive…
Il Torchio was too expensive for what you got.
What kind of cuisine does Anima serve?
So essentially your post just regurgitates what a commentator said on the other sites posting but actually has less information.
I hope it does well. I tried Il Torchio a couple of times and it wasn’t very good…
oh are we lucky! my family loves the food at savoia and it will be nice to have a place like that in walking distance!
Enema?
Enigma?
Actually, when I saw Anima, I was wondering if the patrons would be served by colorful, vibrant, futuristic Japanese women.
