A publisher based on 3rd and Bond streets (yes, very close to these guys and also these guys) is about to up Gowanus’s bookish quotient. PictureBox, which has had an office on 3rd Street since September of last year, is turning part of its space into a storefront where it plans to sell books, host book signings, and maintain a gallery. The company specializes in art and comic books (some of its recent titles are by Brian Chippendale, Cheryl Dunn and Frank Santoro), and it expects to open the new space sometime in January. GMAP
Gowanus is edgy in the Lovecraftian sense. It doesn’t feel like someone’s going to mug you, it feels like a half-man, half-fish is going to harvest your bones for its hatchlings.
I can agree with that however some may disagree.
I love the area either way.
i don’t equate edgy with safe or unsafe.
i equate it with the cultural vibe that exists in a neighborhood.
gowanus seems to be moving in a direction towards increasing the visibility for non mainstream artists and culture.
that’s my version of edgy.
its really not that edgy. Its pretty safe and wedged between three expensive areas. At nights a totally different story but overall I feel safe walking anywhere around the canal. It all looks run down as hell though so that part of the edge is there. Should be interesting to see what happens over the next few years to the area seeing as the water is nice in its own screwed up way and theres alot of area for stores and performance space now that 5th ave is expensive.
if these so called hipsters want edgy, i can’t think of a more edgy neighborhood than gowanus.
the art walk they had the other month was amazing. Its interesting to see whats housed in all those warehouses and factories around the canal. 4th ave is a great place to live right now.
gowanus is really taking shape.
i’m loving it.
being in park slope is the best of all worlds. the beauty of the neighborhood and the close proximity to this incredible burgeoning arts district.
cool. Love the area around there and it seems to have alot of empty stores.
Also the Canning Factory on 3rd and 3rd ave hosts alot of interesting stuff.
