As Brooklyn Heights Blog noted on Friday, the tony nabe is getting a new bakery. A poster is now in the window for the Crumbs Bake Shop chain, which appears to specialize in the art of cupcakery. GMAP

  1. Montague will continue to be dominated by businesses that cater to the lunch crowd…anything generated on the weekend and after 6pm is extra. Hence all new and exciting places are opening on Atlantic…not far from Montague… or if you live on the north side of the Heights, go to Dumbo….

  2. I hear you ML, but all of those places are on leases that are pretty old (or they own the building). We’ll see what happens when they have to re-up. Not saying there aren’t mom and pops, it’s just that the rents make it really hard. And I don’t blame the landlords either. If they can get that kinda rent, then good for them.

I like the chains too. MAC, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, etc. I can’t say I do a lot of shopping in any of them, but they’re lit up when I come home at night. They’re clean and stocked and they shovel their walks. I am not precious about Montague Street.

But yes, complaining online seems to be the hobby of choice for a lot of BH residents.

Cool, thanks for the update, Kens. I had some Williamsburg friends visiting on Saturday, and we were thinking about going there, but we went to Sycamore instead and hung out in the backyard.

  4. The classic Mom and Pop store on Montague Street, Variety Mart, is one that locals love to complain about. And you can’t get more Mom and Pop than Armando’s both Mr and Mrs are often there hanging out. Ditto Theresa’s. Ditto Seaport Flowers, ditto Lassen & Hennigs, Overtures, Montague wine & Liquors, many others. People just like to complain. Period.
