A developer’s plan to link a series of Boerum Hill storefronts with a sprawling, landscaped backyard should soon bear fruit. Four street-level spaces on Atlantic between Third and Fourth streets avenues are now being renovated as part of Barbara Koz Paley’s Atlantic Gardens, which aims to become a small-scale, European-style retail hub where commerce commingles with the 6,000-square-foot back patio’s more earthly delights. Paley is looking to place a mix of users in the retail spaces—one will likely be a restaurant or pastry shop, while another will probably be a clothing store—and all the stores will open out to the shared back garden. A source working on the project told us it may open as early as next spring, though no leases have been signed. It’s in an interesting location given that it’ll happen in the shadow of the big-box happy Atlantic Center but form a bridge to the antique stores and other mom-and-pop businesses farther west on the avenue. Whether or not Atlantic Gardens becomes a destination, as Paley is hoping, remains to be seen.

  1. Sounds terrific. I was just visiting Carmel, Ca and found the shops surrounding the courtyards enchanting. A nice breakfast/brunch place couldn’t lose.

  2. I live in Ditmas Park, so frequently visit other parts of Brooklyn for various amenities. This place looks lovely, and I’m sure I would go out of my way to shop there. What’s the parking situation like? How far from the Q?

  3. Nightmare for those with rear apts upstairs or homes on Pacific St behind this location.
Just what everyone wants. Besides noise from street… now have commerce behind you too.

  4. Fantastic idea. Kind of reminds me of the courtyards within the old government adobe type buildings in Sante Fe with shops and restaurants around them. If done well it should succeed. The future AY residents and office workers would flock to any such stop for lunch too.
