Here’s some good retail news for Red Hook: Next Saturday a new store called Metal and Thread will open on Van Brunt between Dikeman and Coffey. The shop will carry a variety of local, handmade work, including textiles, metalwork, furniture, jewelry and woodwork. Denise Carbonell, who has a gallery on the Lower East Side, is one of the people behind the store. Metal and Thread will be open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. GMAP

  1. Why is it ridiculous? Sounds great. Local artisans always need retail outlets, and people who don’t like mass produced goods are always looking for places to buy them. The neighborhood needs sucessful businesses, no matter what they sell.

I do agree that it would be great if they expanded their hours. 12 to 8,or even 9, in the summer, would help their business. I’ve worked boutique home retail, and most of our business was between 4 and 7, when we closed. We often stayed till 8 because that’s when people came in.

  2. I wouldn’t go that far, 4:04. I have no desire to move to Manhattan, but it would be nice.

I’ve noticed it’s changing a little bit. That new Yogo Monster place that just opened up on 7th ave is open till 10pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends.

    Those are nice hours.

Even if these places stayed open till 8pm once or twice a week would help.

It does drive me a little crazy.

  3. I do agree 3:34. Stores in Brooklyn have terrible hours.

What really gets me are the dry cleaners. They all close at 7:00 PM. If I am particularly busy and have Saturday plans for several weeks in a row, it can be 3-4 weeks before I can pick up my laundry.

Even suburban locations have better hours than this.

Sometimes, it’s maddening enough I want to move to Manhattan.

  4. In Buenos Aires, almost all stores are open till 10pm. Sometimes 11pm or later. And no, they don’t take siestas there, they usually just open later. Who shops at 9 or 10am anyway?

I know this is a different culture, but aren’t we supposed to be the city that never sleeps??

I loved being there and going for a little shopping while walking around looking for a place for late dinner. I spent money, isn’t that what these businesses want?

Here you have to rush everywhere to make it before the doors close.

    It’s ridiculous.

Maybe some businesses will wise up. Especially during the recession. You want my business? Open when I’m able to come!

  5. i’m with 2:58 in general. i am a working woman and i cannot possibly get to shops that close at 7pm. brooklyn, manhattan, wherever.

i know, weekends, but by the time i go to the gym, make breakfast, do laundry, buy groceries, that’s all i have time for without trekking to red hook (or whatever neighborhood that is not my own) because i couldn’t go one weekday after work.
