14hookah.jpgWell, sort of. On Sackett Street, just steps from Smith and just behind Zaytoon’s, there’s a new awning up for a place called Sheesha. We’re assuming the name refers to a sheesha or hookah pipe, as there’s one pictured on the awning. (See close-up at right.) Anybody know if the place is affiliated with Zaytoon’s? And does anybody know if hookah bars are exempt from the smoking ban? If they are, this new spot could be drawing a lot of neighborhood smokers in from the cold.

  1. Hookah bars ARE exempt from the no smoking law. As long as a certain percentage of the bars income comes from smoking of some sort then cigarette/cigar etc smoking is allowed. Illegal drugs (weed) are never allowed. The health dept. did take this into account and it is the same reason why cigar bars have not gone out of buisness. If you don’t like smoke then don’t go! And if you think hookah bars support terrorism then maybe you should also suggest rounding up all the “rag heads” and throwing them in jail….idiot!

  2. Janus: if it’s a stupid question, why ask it?

Hookah, shisha etc. are tobacco products. regardless of fruit flavoring, etc. sheesha, with this kind of pre-opening publicity, congrats – you’ll be getting several visits from the health dept.

  3. the health dept. takes the position that hookah bars are not exempt from the clean air act, however the reality is that if the primary purpose of the place is not to serve food, the place will not be closed down (thanks eg to people like peter vallone). clean air legislators never contemplated hookah bars, and now the owners are taking the position that 1. it’s not really tobacco (bullshit) and 2. it’s an important cultural institution (bullshit too, unless you’re in queens somewhere, if you are on the les or in bklyn — it’s designed to separate hipsters from their $.)
