When we happened by the as-yet-unopened Emeline’s Diner at 373 Lewis Avenue recently, permits were posted, the furniture was in place, and there was someone inside behind the counter. An email to one of the managers listed on the permits was not returned.

The most recent permit was filed in November and approved this month. The restaurant also now has a website and its Facebook page has been up since October of last year. Initially Emeline’s planned to open in late 2013, according to folks inside when we asked in October last year.

The website says “we’re a work in progress” and has some construction photos. Has anyone heard anything about when it might open?

  1. It’s strange how bad Little Brother BBQ’s food and service was considering how competent the Peaches folks are across the board. If they try in earnest to open a real restaurant or cafe there, it should do great. Same thing for Emiline’s. A serious diner would be wonderful.

Mostly I’m disappointed that Celestino has been sold and will be closed until the new owners change it to a new restaurant. It was by far the best restaurant in the neighborhood.

    • I hadn’t heard about Celestino. Do you know anything about the new owners and what kind of place they will open? Any time frame? I have to disagree about the restaurant itself. The decor was great, but I didn’t think the food was that great. It felt like they just took some fresh fish and sprinkled olive oil and lemon on it. It was too basic to merit an expensive dining experience. Also, it just wasn’t hitting the mark with customers. I’m not surprised that it was sold. Let’s be hopeful something good takes its place. Anyone have an update on the place next to Saraghina on Halsey. I was told Saraghina was opening up some kind of bakery there (an were waiting for some fancy oven to be delivered from Spain), but I have seen very little activity.

  2. They appear to be moving at a glacial pace. I like to be optimistic, but I don’t have high hopes. I would think they would have papered over the windows to build excitement/curiosity. Instead I have walked by and seen a pile of furniture for months. Every couple of days, I see someone puttering about in there. A nice dine would be great. Let’s see. I have higher expectations for the place on Decatur and Marcus Garvey.

As to Little Brother. The owners don’t seem to be handling it very well. First they closed one side, but kept the other side open. Then they closed both sides, but had a sign saying they would be reopening April 7th. That sign stayed up way passed April 7th – as the place remained closed. They don’t appear to be doing much work, but who knows. It looks like they are using one side as an office. All that being said, I though the food offerings were too similar to Peaches – so “something different” would be appreciated. I know that one of the owners owns the building next to Beso. He had previously said he would be developing the retail space, but that was years ago. I do think the neighborhood is on the cusp of getting some much needed retail improvements, but we will see. Anyone have an update on the New Casablanca Lounge space on Malcolm X and Macdonough?

  3. I agree, Peter. Real Thai or Mexican or Japanese or fish/meat/chicken/salads would be great. Delivery would also be great. Anything genuine and professional. It’d be a shame if it was chicken and waffles like their other two places that get uniformly disappointed reviews…
