Scarano Architects, based in DUMBO, reports it will sponsor its seventh annual summer internship program for architectural design students. Over a three-month period this summer, there will be four student interns hosted at the company’s offices at 110 York St. in DUMBO, according to Robert Scarano Jr., principal…The group of four students will experience the architectural design process by conducting research, shadowing design team members, observing client meetings, exploring the intricacies of architectural and construction details and obtaining the critical skills needed to work in cities like New York. We’ve designed a successful incubator-style internship that not only trains but also mentors, said Scarano. We’re committed to reaching back and helping those who follow in our footsteps.
“speaking as someone who is typically responsible for hiring young architects at my firm, a Scarano internship on your resume WILL NOT HELP!!”
very good point.
Had a real giggle reading the ad.
Too damn funny. Perhaps the master can learn something from the student…how to be an architect in NYC. Ooops, I mean a practicing architect.
Have to agree with feral, low brow design (in my POV) should not dictate the working class taste. And for the record, what working class stiff can afford a Scarano designed condo? Or would want to, for that matter?
“He didn’t push to the limit he pushed BEYOND the limit.” Could not have said it any better.
Thwak: He didn’t push to the limit he pushed BEYOND the limit. Or is your version of the limit “anything as long as you don’t get caught”?
In my opinion he is a criminal. Guilty of pilfering assets from the public coffers. Assets such as access to light and air belong to the public and are regulated by zoning.
This recession has hit architects hard. Architecture students graduating under a mountain of student loan debt are in the same boat and need jobs badly. However, speaking as someone who is typically responsible for hiring young architects at my firm, a Scarano internship on your resume WILL NOT HELP!!
thwackamole1, is your inference that the working class has no taste whatsoever, as well as a complete disregard for contextual design? Just asking.
Lots of people are happily living in Scarano’s buildings, and by pushing the extremely tight NYC snob zoning regulations to the limit, he should be regarded as a hero to the working classes.
What’s next: The Jeff Dahmer school of social etiquette?
bod – i think the interest here is the fact that it IS scarano. one of the most notorious architects around reported to the press that they will be mentoring young interns and helping them “follow in our footsteps.” funny.
Aside from the fact that it’s d-bag Scarano, so what? Most architectural offices take on summer interns (except mine). I worked for the Southeastern Massachusetts version of Bob Scarano during my college summers, and they had absolutely ZERO influence on my current career or design taste. I wouldn’t worry, those kids won’t learn a thing, all they want is beer $$.
Oh dear.
