You can’t make this stuff up. From the Brooklyn Eagle:

Scarano Architects, based in DUMBO, reports it will sponsor its seventh annual summer internship program for architectural design students. Over a three-month period this summer, there will be four student interns hosted at the company’s offices at 110 York St. in DUMBO, according to Robert Scarano Jr., principal…The group of four students will experience the architectural design process by conducting research, shadowing design team members, observing client meetings, exploring the intricacies of architectural and construction details and obtaining the critical skills needed to work in cities like New York. We’ve designed a successful incubator-style internship that not only trains but also mentors, said Scarano. We’re committed to reaching back and helping those who follow in our footsteps.

  1. Actually yes. Some firms have alliances with certain arch schools whereby the kids entering into their 5 year (thesis) do time in an unpaid summer internship that counts towards credit. Therefore, the kids (or their parents) are actually paying THEM for the job!

  2. “Most architect interns in NYC make on the order of $20-25 per hour”

BWHAHAHAHA thanks for the laugh. Perhaps interns, aka, the graduated but not yet licensed variety.

College summer interns – a lot less.

Great – Scarano is taking free labor (that should be paid) and trying to make it sound like a learning experience so he does not run afoul of labor laws. It is bad enough that non-profits demand that students take unpaid internships – it is truly disgusting when for profit entities do so.

I think all interns should be paid at least minimum wage.

Link to an article that says these are unpaid internships?

Most architect interns in NYC make on the order of $20-25 per hour. Same thing with CPA interns, pay is roughly the same as first year associates.
