Right under the huge apartment complex known as 725 4th Ave, three brand new stores have opened up in the past month, a convent store, a pizza place and now Jules Coffee House. No word yet on what brand of coffee or food they will serve but Alex Jones, who is the super of 725 4th Ave, is the contractor in charge of construction. One block away on 24th st, is a 24-hour Dunkin’ Donuts that’s windows are now proudly covered in advertisement for their Waffle Breakfast Sandwich. One block north of Jules is On The Corner Delicatessen, which was just named the best bodega in Brooklyn by L Magazine and serves up some amazing coffee and sandwiches. Tough competition? GMAP

  1. Few things:

    1. The “Best Bodega in NYC” piece in L Magazine was maybe written by an intern, but it was not DECIDED by one. It was decided by people sending in their own reasons why their bodega was best.

How do I know? Because I’m the one who submitted On the Corner, and I won. Now, granted, this means the competition is only between bodegas whose customers are enthusiastic or bored or crazy enough to write into a contest to claim theirs is the best. But to be fair, there was a week of beer as first prize, and On The Corner IS the best. And I’m certainly NOT a 23 year old Gen-Y Solider. And I only had sex in the bodega once. And it was sorta average.

    2. While the competition might be fierce, I’m glad to see some life on 4th ave down here. It just LOOKS better, which means people will be more likely to move here, which will ACTUALLY make it better (There’s actually a great new bar on 23rd and 5th called Bar 718 to support this idea).

    3. It’s spelled WACK, goddamnit. “Whack” is an onomatopÅ“ia.

  2. Most “Best of” pieces in magazines like L are written by 22 or 23 year old interns who happen to once live near of gotten laid nearby some store and form a precious memory of it. The Gen Y army never sleeps and they’ve been to cooler places than you have…so they claim.
