At the 2nd Annual Vendy Awards, which take place this Sunday, October 22nd from 6 to 9:30 PM, an international crew of cooks a Columbian lady selling arepas, a Sri Lankan man doing vegan dosas, a Pakistani man selling halal, and 3 brothers, who grew up the California-Mexico border, cooking carne asada will be competing for the title of NYC’s best street vendor. Piedad “the Arepa Lady” Cano (pictured at right), who sells her corn arepas on Roosevelt Avenue between 78th & 79th Streets in Queens, is the only outer-borough vendor in the competition, but for whatever it’s worth, the Brooklyn Record’s editor, Kara Zuaro (that’s me), will be representing Brooklyn as one of the judges. The event will take place at St. Marks Church-in-the-Bowery, Second Avenue and East 10th Street in Manhattan $50 admission includes food from the vendors and open bar of beer and wine. Tickets are available online. We do wish one of the vendors from the Red Hook ballfields were in the running maybe next year. Can anyone recommend any other must-try street food in Brooklyn?
