quotation-icon.jpgHow do you think grand old New York City pre-wars and most of central Paris came to be? Prague? Florence? I could go on…Vanity, ego, wealth, whatever. It gives us beautiful varied architecture! Not cookie cutter high rises. We need more not less nuts displaying their vanity and wealth! Rather that than rich developers and investors interested only in the bottom line and displaying blah, marketed still toward “luxury” condos.

  1. 9:54,

Your point is well taken but probably simplistic.

Do you truly believe that these buildings, going up all over, at such a rate of speed, (and which often require the smashing of an “earlier aesthetic” building which was likely much smaller and now part of an endangered species of building), are simply an example of our generation’s aesthetic? Please.

Hate to disagree, but disagree. Strongly.
    It is about money.

Certainly sometimes they are quite beautiful and thoughtful, but I daresay that is the exception. And I’ve seen many of them inside and out. Most are awful.

But that is true no matter what era you are talking about. Every generation has a dominant aesthetic – be modernism, abstract, post-mod, etc.
Trying to say that some how this generation has lost its sense of uniqueness is rather unusual.

  3. Awww, thanks Biff, (blushing)

I had actually thought that would be the least read thread of the day.

And 4:08 & 4:50, context is everything. Might want to consider that the quote doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Read the thread.

I didn’t say all glass towers sucked, or that I couldn’t appreciate how “cool” a beautifully developed glass tower might look next to an 18th century building. I said that no one seemed to build anything else anymore. To the point that we appear to have lost an art form of sorts, and that without more stringent landmarking, we risk turning into a Dallas.

  4. “WELL CONSIDERING YOU ARE READING AND POSTING ON A SITE CALLED BROWNSTONER, I’D SAY YOURS IS THE DUMBEST COMMENT OF THE DAY.”

Wow your reply does not even make sense. WTF does the site name has anything to do with what defines varied?

The saying goes… “it is better not to open your mouth…”

  5. “Yea like there is nothing cookie cutter about 24 brownstones in a row in one city block.
Holy shit people cant be this dumb.”

WELL CONSIDERING YOU ARE READING AND POSTING ON A SITE CALLED BROWNSTONER, I’D SAY YOURS IS THE DUMBEST COMMENT OF THE DAY.

  6. Funny, when I think of Europe and how cool the architecture is there, it’s all about how they put cutting-edge modern glass buildings right next to centuries old structures.

They don’t have hangups about it. So much more cool.

  7. The comment is dumb and superficial. It is another one knee-jerk anti glass condo comments.
The examples of ‘varied’ is only varied because units of same design is fucking gone. Get a fucking clue. Yea like there is nothing cookie cutter about 24 brownstones in a row in one city block.

Holy shit people cant be this dumb.

  8. Or, john, none of the topics were spiced up enough today to generate the posts.

    Park Slope…………

    Stroller moms……….

    Ghetto………

I tought we were headed down a slippery slope with those Syrian Jew comments from this original thread!!!
