I am in Florida still, will come back tonight assuming no weather problems. One thing I am very impressed with. My parents have a tightly knit community of neighbors and friends. I cleaned out their refrigerator yesterday, filled with gifts from neighbors — pies, roasts, stew, all kinds of foods brought to help my parents out. People are constantly looking in on them, driving them places, entertaining them in small ways. They are in a mess still, but on the mend.
“they are going to hire a woman in Central America”
This is why I think it’s wrong to judge without knowing all the facts. Is the surrogate going to live in Central America while pregnant? Or, as is more often the case, will she live in proximity to the parents, where her behavior can be monitored, they can make sure she gets the best medical care, etc.? It’s unclear from the limited fact pattern presented to us by Professor Lechacal is all I’m saying.
You’re a Pasty Brit living in Canada. Americanisms should only concern you on alternate weekends.

Agree with Montrose as well.
(Also, using the plural to describe being pregnant = another weird Americanism I can’t get used to).
“Hypo: What if, when you got a terminal disease, you could pay someone in a third world country to have it for you?”
self preservation and creating a hue-mon are different.
$1400!
Between drafty windows and barum and bailey upstairs, $1400 maybe too much.
Though the kids did build a lovely medieval fort to throw snowballs at moonfaces.
