After some debate, Community Board 2 voted on Wednesday night to approve a pop-up cafe planned for Smith and Warren. As Streetsblog noted, the pop-up is sponsored by Smith Street’s Ecopolis Café, “which will pay the cost of building the temporary public space.” Pop-up cafes caused some serious controversy over in Manhattan recently, and while that wasn’t the case at the recent CB2 meeting, the cafe wasn’t welcomed with open arms by all. “I think it stinks,” said one board member, who wasn’t pleased that the cafe would take away a parking spot. Others worried that it might have a domino effect, with other Smith Street restaurants wanting to install pop-ups and overcrowding the street. Because pop-ups must go through the Community Board the board itself could prevent that from happening. And when someone wondered who would want to sit out in the street anyway, Chairperson John Dew responded: “I don’t know. We’ll test it out and see.” Ultimately, the cafe was approved by the board, with 18 voting in favor, 10 opposed, and one abstention. It’ll be in operation from May until October.

Great news! Lively street culture keeps things safe and welcome. The people who run the cafe seem very nice and responsible, and generally any independent small business owner who wants to invest in the community, create jobs, and make it better has my support. I live on that block and am happy about it.
> unfortunately it’s the parisization of nyc.
Said the man who has never been to Paris.
pete, unfortunately it’s the parisization of nyc. yes, a worthless, smug, cafe culture.

Pete, you’re just in a bad mood because they cancelled “All My Children” and “One Life To Live.”
It is annoying trying to walk by all those annoying idle people sitting around at these outdoor seating places. They look useless and smug. Maybe I should feel sorry for them that they have no life and nothing better to do. But can’t they all just sit on inside all those starbucks so I don’t have to see them.
I really don’t know why people are against pop-up stores, even they do take up a decent chunk of the sidewalk.
I propose we just ban all cars in Brooklyn, and turn the streets into sidewalks.
well pop ups did cause a huge domino effect in soho. pretty much like 1 in 4 stores is a pop up store

Someone care to translate?
Rob, this pop up café is just outdoor seating for the already existing (non-profit) coffee shop. But I hear your point.
