Shortly before 9 a.m. this morning a pedestrian crossing Front Street at Washington Street in Dumbo was struck by a commercial van. No word on the extent of the injuries. While certainly a busy corner, the number of stop signs at this corner doesn’t make it a likely candidate for this kind of thing.

  1. “Why should a car yield for a person, when pedestrians can’t stay on the ‘effing sidewalk?!”

because cars can kill people – and even if someone is obnoxious – death is a little bit of a steep penalty

what REALLY cracks me up is if this was a story about a bike rider hitting a pedestrian we’d have 50 posts already. but because it’s a vehicle – eh, no problem.

  2. I hope that the person is okay and I’m thankful that this doesn’t happen more often since Brooklyn drivers tend to think that a Stop sign means slow down to ten to 15 mph and then speed up to 40.

Also, I’m finding it very ironic that the van says, ‘guardian’ and ‘protect’ on it.

  3. Drivers do not always look for pedestrians. Yesterday I was crossing the same junction (on foot), when a taxi backed into me. He apologised profusely and said he was trying to avoid a mother and child and admitted he hadn’t looked into his rear vision mirro. No one actually comes to a complete stop at the stop signs—as they should.

  4. First — I hope the person is OK.

That being said, the reason vehicles get the de facto right-of-way (as BHO says rightly) is because pedestrians are part of the problem… there needs to be mutual respect. Teach by Example!

Why should a car yield for a person, when pedestrians can’t stay on the ‘effing sidewalk?! Red Light — huge volume of cross traffic, no way you can cross the street — where do the Pedestrians stand?! 1/4 of the way into the travel lane on the road! Keep yourself and your farking stroller on the sidewalk! Cars can pass faster and more safely.

What PISSES me off is when I am standing on the curb waiting and some douche steps IN FRONT of me… he’s now both IN TRAFFIC and IN MY WAY. Aarrrgh!
