The culinary scene in the Southeastern corner of Clinton Hill just got a whole lot brighter with the opening earlier this month of Brown Betty Cafe at 466 Grand Avenue. Area resident Cynthia Walker, who’s worked extensively as both a private chef and restaurant manager, has created a space that is at once both modern and welcoming. Emphasizing organic ingredients, the menu ranges from a wide assortment of pastries and coffees to sandwiches and salads and, starting tonight, a full dinner menu. Following on the heels of Choice Market’s April opening four blocks up the street, Grand Avenue is shaping up to be quite a tasty stretch. And now, thanks to recent developments, you don’t even have to worry about encountering any crack heads as you walk back and forth between the two restaurants.
I agree with Kawa–
I have walked into Brown Betty Cafe a few times alone and with friends and I/We have experienced the same rude treatment that Kawa was expressing. I do understand that Cynthia may be overwhelmed at times. However, it is NOT the CUSTOMERS fault. Whenever we walk in we are never greeted and treated as if we never even walked in. We are the customers that are supporting her business. Sometimes a little kindness takes you a long way.
Our apologies to anyone who was having trouble posting comments here — the bug has been fixed!
In response to kawa –
It’s funny… to know exactly who you are – and you’re projecting! The customer is not always right and your energy sucked as soon as you entered the envirionment – it proly… sucked b-4 you even got here. Your sense of entitlment is astonishing… go to some other cafe and sit at a table that has a big o’L RESERVED sign on it!
This is a THE place to go if you like rude service, terrible coffee and overpriced food. I genuinely felt unwelcome. As a rule I prefer patronizing small, entrepreneurial local businesses, especially if they’re right around the corner, but with a presentation like that I’ll gladly take my business elsewhere.
i, too, prefer outpost. but it’s good to see these new places popping up in the neighborhood. we need to support them so they stay around.
Thank the goddess for Brown Betty Cafe. I’m not a coffee drinker, so that vice doesn’t make me a regular, it’s the food that brings me back day after day. Cynthia knows how to make your taste buds water. Whether it’s the cheddar/broccolli quiche, homemade mac and cheese or the jerk chicken. You’ve got to sink your teeth into some of this fine, fine food.
Stop on by and tell her Kelly sent you!
I suspect Keith and Kim at C-Fizz just got tired. Altho Keisha’s mom owns the building, I don’t think they were making enough money for it to be worth it. I kept thinking they should take over the space next door and do a bigger restaurant. The hard thing with small spots is that they seem to take as much energy as big places. I don’t know how Mark and Carmen of Grand 275 have keot that place going as the wonderful hotspot it has been for so long. I feel so lucky to live in Brooklyn.
i stopped in today, had an okay thai iced tea. a couple was dining in the sidewalk seating. the woman was very nice, thanked me for coming in. and i’m so happy to have another nice place in the neighborhood; i think of it as complimenting the space between choice and the outpost, rather than competing with them. it’s right around the corner off fulton: don’t miss it!
does anyone know what happened to c-fizz, on putnam?
let’s not let these new, local businesses go out.

BrownBetty has better food than Outpost, though it is small. She was grilling salmon that day, I went there too. It was tasty.
