Everyone should start off their posts “Dear Brownstoner” or better still “Ladies & Gentlemen”.
Suitable sign-offs include “I remain your humble servant, yours sincerely” or “Please do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions or comments”.
You make a great point, but I’ve never found a proprietor of any business to be grateful for my purchases (which directly feed him/her), so I wouldn’t expect A web proprietor to be grateful for my time and comments (which inderectly feeds him/her)
I was going about my day and these comments kept coming back to me:
“Nor is the level of discussion going on in today’s Open Thread really where we’d like it to be.”
“Can’t remember the new user’s name but he/she was absolutely thrashed. Maybe it was in an Open Thread? Can u remember?”
“March is actually going to be a record month in terms of visitor traffic–we’ll clear 1.5 million pageviews for the first time so that’s not a concern.”
So according to Mr. B the open thread commenters aren’t commenting at the appropriate highbrow levels. It’s assumed they must be the one’s who attacked an innocent newbie (who as it turns out makes comments that are anything but innocent).
Yet these open thread menaces helped him reach new records. Nice.

THL, I think I was pretty direct about that in my post over there. It was … uncalled for!

Am I wrong or does this seem really ungrateful?
