DIBS, what do you think? Should we offer to post captions if ROTW posts a picture of himself first?
What, in all honesty, it was much like last time. A bunch of people showed up and had a nice time talking with each other about many topics. A fun evening and your presense would have been an enjoyable surprise. More people than you think expressed the thought that it would be nice if you showed up. I look forward to seeing you dance at the next one, no matter what the state of the economy or the brownstone market.
Regarding yesterday’s post, you are right about Ford telling NYC to drop dead in ’74-75. That is because there was no will in the Fed. Govt. to bail out NYC for its financial crisis resulting largely from NYC’s own mismanagement of its debt (not deficit, actual debt). NYC’s flirtation with bankruptcy far outstripped other municipalities’ struggles with cash flow at that time because overrelaince on bond issues and years of debt mismanagement put NYC deep into a hold of its own making. Private disinvestment and abandonment of large parts of the City contributed, but was not the sole cause.
While cities and states around the country are running budget deficits, NYC’s current deficit is nothing like California’s and NYC does not now have the problems with its bond debt that it did back then. Even though NYC is hard hit by the problems on Wall Street, the City is managed afar better now than then and is much better positioned to weather the storm than it was 30 years ago. I would be curious if you have specific data about NYC that suggests otherwise. We are also a long way from economic conditions that would support an epidemic of landlord arson to unload failing buildings, as was the case in the 70s.
cobble–yeah, sorry we couldn’t chat more. It always feels like there is going to be so much time and then you realize you can’t have 30 amazing conversations in 90 minutes. Did you talk to Simon and Alex?
I thought I recognised the tall guy in the pinstripe suite! In my defence, I have only watched one episode of NY Housewives when I woke up too early and it was on a repeat at 2am – one of the benefits of working 30 feet from my bedroom.
Thanks BRG. As much as I adore her, next time I am going to do a better job of getting a longer leash for the night! No babies…It was just this week was a bit of a doozy family wise with my wife going back to work and all so I really couldn’t make a night of it. The baby was remarkably chilled out for such a boisterous environment though.
wasder…that 11:31 post might not be such a good idea. Children are very impressionable. Remember what Chris Rock says: “A parent’s one duty is to keep their daughter off the pole.”
Baby Wasder is soooooo cute. She is adorable. I wanted to pinch her pudgy cheeks.
Wasder next time bring her early, I’ll watch and play with her all night.
“What…I don’t want you using those photos as a visual stimulus for something dirty now. The Internet is not just for porn.”
Naw I was thing on printing them out and pasting them at the bottom of my toilet..
The What
Someday this war is gonna end…
