Speaking of cultural knowledge, there is (or was) a 6th Circuit judge who required clerkship applicants to fill out a cultural literacy Q&A. I didn’t fill it out because I did not want to clerk in Kentucky or whereever he was, but I remember questions including “What is a gandy dancer?” and “Explain the difference between D.H. Lawrence and T.E. Lawrence.”
