  1. before you go, make sure to rent Mary Kate & Ashley’s When In Rome (it’s a movie starring the two of them on a trip to rome). it’s not as good as their movies Passport to Paris and Winning London.

and yes, most of my knowledge of europe is from having watched their movies!! (and visiting them on the internet of course)

  2. one of my fondest memories from backpacking in italy happened when I was sitting in the lobby of a pensione in florence that was full of american college students. this gaggle of blond girls stumbles through the door:

girl 1: “Um, hiiii… we have a reservation for smith!”

desk clerk (all smiles): “ahhh!! you are italian, like me!?!?!”

girls: [giggle, giggle] then in unison: “noooo! we’re american!!!” [giggles]

    clerk (smile vanquished): “I know.”

  3. I second the amalfi coast… I spent a few night in ravello (up the hill directly above amalfi) about 12 years ago and it was spectacular. not sure how things have changed since then, but it was not terribly expensive and the views were amazing… you could take a short winding bus ride down the hill during the day to hit the beach and head back up to drink wine and stuff your face with pasta at night.

  4. Movies filmed in Venice: Don’t look now, Casino Royale (Daniel Craig), Death in Venice, Summertime (Katherine Hepburn.) Don’t look now is SCARY.

Venice wasn’t my favorite but I went in May and I was freezing and felt no tourist love (felt very abused there got bad service everywhere). But if I had more time, I would go all around on boats, which are the buses and zoom around all the canals. No car traffic anywhere, no roads, no grass, you get lost all the time (me anyway). I would need to go at another time, for more time and apparantly spend a little more money on accomodations.

Florence is a special place because of all the museums, the small scale city, great places to buy stuff (leather, ceramics) but to me, Rome topped everything.
