  1. Scott;

    In the early 1960’s, NYC had something on the order of 150 Fortune 500 HQ’s. Actually, though, I don’t think this metric is as important as it once was. As anyone in corporate America knows, most HQ’s have been slimmed down considerably.

  2. I’ve been browsing the Fortune 500 list and the geography of their corporate headquarters, and here are some tidbits.

    By state, NY has 57, with CA having 53 and TX 51.

    By city, NYC is easily tops with 45 compared to 22 for Houston. Atlanta and Dallas each have 10.

    I made an attempt to sort by metro area, based on my geographic knowledge and definitions.
    The greater NYC area (including Northern NJ and Southwest CT) has 78, the San Francisco Bay area has 29, Chicago area has 28, Houston has 22, Los Angels area has 21, and Dallas-Fort Worth has 18.

    It seems like the biggest looser on the list is Florida, which is 4th in population but only has 16 HQs out of 500.

  3. Dunkin Donuts has been though a lot over the years, with expansions, contractions, purchases, spin-offs.

    The most recent corporate incarnation was created a few years ago when they were spun off so that their parent company could focus on its core liquor business.

  4. re: Dunkin Donuts…the way I heard it, the original founder was Greek–he and his brother or brother-in-law founded DD and Mr. Donuts. They fought. DD was sold, and was expanded from a small local chain in Massachusetts to the Megadonut it is today.
