Well, Benson, you might like this friend then. I don’t know that he would agree with your political point, but he thinks that she produces nothing of value. This friend is actually more liberal politically than I am and he is a good person to talk to because he always cuts to the heart
of things and has ABSOLUTELY no time for fluff.
And even more to the point: the problem with Maureen Dowd is not that she lacks gravitas, nor that she is a liberal. The problem with Maureen Dowd is that she speaks from the POV of a snarky, smug, elitist.
Unfortunately for the Times, they just lost their best liberal columnist (Bob Herbert). I had a lot of respect for him, though I rarely agreed with him.
He is not gay though he has a very refined aesthetic sense, he is very well educated, very serious (has gravitas) but a good sense of humor and she apparantly disgusts him because she is a kind of nasty birdbrain. (and a bit of a bitch)
I realized I just wrote something above — totally non-committal — about Maureen Dowd, ala the first category of Times story.
Ok, how about this? She is entertaining, funny, colorful, glamorous and never really says anything of major importance. She lacks gravitas. (but I don’t care)

She seems to me like she’s either got a pole up her ass or needs one.

More to the point: people like Maureen Dowd are the exact reason why no one from the Northeast has been elected to national office since John Kennedy.

” But I do think she is very glam and funny. ”
You have just lost 50 points in my book.
Oh, Benson, don’t DO THIS TO ME. 🙂
