  1. Actually rob, then I would bag the 401k altogether and sign up for a ROTH IRA that automatically takes the same money from your paycheck. Roth much better deal long term than 401k for younger people. No taxes when you take it out after 59-1/2. Others may disagree.

  2. denton, no 401k matching program here. lots of companies cut that perk a looooong time ago. i probably SHOULD up my percentage but im just so chary of the whole thing, what if i got hit by a bus tomorrow?! i put in 1% of my pay. which i know is like the smallest amount possible…

    *rob*

  3. When I get some time, I am going to do a very detailed post with more details on a conference I went to over the weekend at NYU. Somehow I think you would find it interesting. It was sponsored by the Irish Cultural Arts Center and the Ireland House, entitled “The Irish Family, Who do we think we are?” I thought it was fabulous. Some of the speakers: Pete Hamill, Peter Quinn (writer), Colim Toilbin (writer and poet, i.e. Brooklyn), head of Literature dept at NYU, Dr. Garrett O’Connor, head of Betty Ford Clinic, Fionna Flanagan, actress, NYU historians doing an Oral History Project with Irish Americans, Irish emigrees, etc. There was reading of literature, poetry, panels, the presentation by the head of the Betty Ford Clinic knocked my socks off. It was fabulous.

  4. yes, the starting age could be changed. although most talk is still about what age get ‘full soc sec’.
What they did some years back is made it after certain age – could still work/earn any amount and still collect soc. sec. with no reduction in benefits. That seemed a giveaway to certain group..
