  1. I believe Japan is all 60 hz because we told them to do it that way.

Much of the world is on 50 hz for no good reason other than 50 is a nice even number and is half of 100. 60 hz more efficiently transports power over long distance.

  2. There are two incompatible halves of the US grid (ignoring Texas, which is it’s own system). The break is in the rockies I think. I believe it basically boils down to the 60 hz cycles not being synched up on each size but it’s been a while since I looked at this. I believe the power has to be transformed to DC to make a link between the two interconnects.

  3. I have an antique, child-size rolltop that was my mother’s & then my brother’s & mine. I love it.

The circular cases were English at Bergdorf. They really were stunning. I’d seen similar in UK but these were truly magnif. I have a tacky little one that was in a catalogue years ago – $50.

  4. Somehow, I think the Japanese will end up teaching the world a lesson on how a nation can rebuild and return from massive disaster.
I recall hearing an interview with a retired ambassador to the Far East years ago.
He had been covering the entire region for decades and the interviewer asked him what he was impressed with most in his years of service.
Without hesitation, he said it was a “unified Japan”.

  5. 10 grand a piece!
    sheesh, that’s pricey.
Where did you see them for sale,
    at the Smithsonian?

    Probably a good investment though.
I know dibs is our resident
    expert on American antique furniture.

Last year I found an antique oak
miniature roll top desk for littlegirllegion.
I got it for $60 at a yard sale.
    I love yard sales.
