In terms of monetary damages, this is certain to be the most expensive disaster in world history.
In terms of human lives lost, it will be well down the list but is still almost certain to top the worst disaster in US history (the 1900 Galveston hurricane that killed 8,000+ people)
The US navy did pull their vessels back after some troops came back in helicopters with measurable levels of radiation. That said, the navy did say that they were not near hazardous levels.
I’m not sure I have the energy today to get into a full discussion, but the post Katrina situation in New Orleans was very complex, and any attempts to compare it with a single other disaster or to assign blame to one or two groups will fall far short of the truth.
There are a million plus, totally stranded without food and water and it is barely above freezing. There is no clue to the extent of the dead, certain towns were decimated.
Wow, it seems there were a few more Pips with Etson than I remember. But seriously, yes, DIBS those guys were worse than you by an order of magnitude.
On a serious note, m4l, benson, dona and others, I think we are all thinking about the earthquake and the difficulties everyone is dealing with over there. I think it ranks as the 4th or 5th worst known, in terms of the severity of the quake.
