Wasn’t the Mona Lisa attacked by a crazed man once in the early 1910s? How close can you get to the statue David? the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives is under about a foot of glass as I remember.

OK JB, but have you gone to the louvre and thought you were looking at the mona lisa and thought you were looking at the original when in fact you were just looking at a copy (chances are 2 out of 3, as kens has informed us)?
So as long as you *think* you’re looking at an original that’s enough?
And what’s the difference between thinking you’re looking at an original and actually looking at an original?
