  1. The headhunter gave me a private directory of managers in the field I was looking in. This was the 1980s. You don’t need that any more because there is Facebook, LinkedIn, Google. You can find managers at any company just by googling the name and “president”
    etc.

Never call the HR department. Please! What a waste of time. Call the hiring manager.

Practice until it sounds like the most natural thing in the world. If you act like it is, everyone else will act like it is too. People are surprisingly eager to help.

  2. Cobblehiller, East New York: DIBS and Biff have just demonstrated the principle of calling people. All you have to do is ask Biff for a name or two and then you call up the person cold (practice first) and say your nice friend Biff referred you and does he know of any openings?

If you’re applying to a named company online, chances are pretty good you should be able to find someone who knows someone who can tell you the name of the hiring manager. Then call them and just say you saw their ad and state your qualifications in one sentence and ask for an interview. Be brief.

I forgot the most important part: Your job as an unemployed person is to get interviews, not send in resumes. The headhunter said if I went on five interviews, someone would offer me a job. Turned out I got one in three interviews. But I was young, 22.

Anyone laid off now has my heartfelt best wishes. This is a very difficult time to be looking. Very few industries are hiring. Think health care.

DIBS, those boots are gorgeous and would look nice with pegged, slightly short wool pants and a simple sweater. Though we don’t want you looking like a gestapo agent crossed with Pee-Wee Herman. Unless that’s your thing, of course.

  3. I wish I could say I’m too young for greys, but really I’m right on track…I have a big white patch in the front – same as other women in my family. So I brush my hair in a way that covers the white!

Au revoir THL! [I think the ‘dynamic duo’ are on tv tonight – I’m making BH watch!]
