Lots of other leaders in the middle east want him to stay. Israel sure as hell wants him to stay. Saudis want him to stay. List goes on. I would guess all those guys are seriously worried about the domino effect if Egypt goes. Right now Mubarek knows exactly what those gov’t will and won’t do to support him. He also knows the military is at least benign.
Speaking of inexplicably long-lived despots, last night I went to a showing of Pray the Devil Back to Hell, about Charles Taylor and the Liberian civial war. The raw footage of the boy soldiers training, marching, leering into the camera, and shooting people was horrifying.
