arkady — You think my hero is Tom Jones??? Oh, you mean Jefferson. Interesting guy, but not a hero. Of the founding generation I like Adams’s integrity, even if he was a bit of a crank. I’m fairly partial to Brandeis and T. Marshall. The folks running the Highlander Folk School in the 40s and 50s were tremendously smart and brave. Pols and lawyers rarely seem heroic to me. It’s the people who put themselves on the line and make movements happen, as well as providing the vision and organizational tools, that I find most inspiring.
Speaking of OWH — the eugenics discussion here the other day reminded me of his awful line in an opinion justifying forced sterilization in the face of a constitutional challenge: “Three generations of imbeciles is enough.”
Rip Taylor, Paul Lynde, Hunter S. Thompson or Dylan Thomas
What a collection, though I’m aquarian not a gemini.
