One of the most suppressed pieces of history among academicians today is the role of the scientific community in the fashionable eugenics movement prior to WWII. Planned Parenthood also played a big role in this movement, a fact that they would like all to now forget.
It is also not widely recognized that the leading opponent to the eugenics movement in the US at that time was the Catholic Church.
Yes, Hattie Lacks, not Laws. The Hela line. really interesting book deals with the intersection of medical research protocols and many interesting questions of informed consent, bad history where race is involved (not just Tuskegee and syphillis), the individual family story, and the science and medicine itself and what happened over time with Hela, which is fascinating. erally nicely done.
Jester, Hillary’s statemt last time was a “safe” one. she didnt back the protestors nor did she diss the existing regime. it will again be a similar safe statemt later. it is NOT our gov policy to come out to diss allies unless it’s blatantly obvious the existing regimes are toast
slopefarm,
I’ve heard of Hattie Laws but I haven’t read the book.
It is fascinating to realize that cancer cells are cells that don’t stop growing and can go on indefinitely.
Perhaps sometime in the future, cancer cells will be the key to immortality.
As I once mentioned, I happened to be at an Air Force base on that day, testifying before a military commission. I was working for a subcontractor on a military system project known as “Commando Fox”. As later became known, the main contractor had mis-designed their system, which resulted in activating a safety-release device that I had designed. The activation of this safety-release device was a big deal, money-wise. It would cost millions of dollars to put the system back together.
The main contractor, in a CYA move, tried to blame my device, saying it was not properly designed. Hence, I had to testify. Fortunately, I had my ducks in a row. I was in the middle of my testimony when the news of the disater happened, and the proceedings were temporarily suspended so that all could run to the TV and see what was happening. The emotions were running high that day. It also underscored the whole reason for the military commission of that day: poor design can have consequences.
By the way, that main contractor is still around, and they have done some major work for our subway system

wow benson- that must have been devastating. I still remember watching the footage on TV, in absolute shock.

Hillary was on Tv the other night; she basically said Egypt had to give in/learn to deal with its own people democratically.
Challenger disaster happened 25 years ago today.

Hattie Lacks
“Hillary is probably going to issue another “safe” statemt – ie not going to diss or support the existing regime”
Likely.
