donatella, one of the big issues with older people is the amount of time it takes to fully recover from the general anesthesia.
My 73 year old friend in philly had a hip replacement 6 weeks ago, was up and about the next day and doing stairs three days later. BUT…he says he has still not recovered from anasthesi and takes naps a few times a day. he has a very close friend who’s a neurologist and he says that most times the doctor’s don’t explain this as an ongoing side effect and it can last 6 months.
So, good he didn’t do the by-pass at least from that standpoing. Stents are well proven technology.
I was pleased to see how my father reasoned out his treatment with his doctor. I was terrified that if he got bypass surgery, he wouldn’t ever really recover from it. That is such an assault on ones body. I have a friend who is 64 and had a quadruple bypass and he was a basketcase for at least 4 months. What about an 88 year old man?
Even for his age, he has had an active life, playing golf and doing a lot of things; why spend a year+ shuffling around with a walker in a rehab facility. And he formed a good relationship with his cardiologist who was impressed with my dad – they formed a little mutual admiration society. After going through the whole discussion about what to do, my sister who was with him, said his parting words to his buddy, the cardiologist were “I love you”.
Oh, and I’m really behind on my urban lingo…wtf does it mean to go hard in the paint???
