Hiya Benson, I would NEVER put words in your mouth. I could misunderstand you, but never put words in your mouth. Anyway, I do believe that the US is a (we could debate THE primary force and a primary force wording till we fall down) force for good in the world and that it makes mistakes too.
Isn’t it amazing how the OT goes? I had to leave today at 2:30 and the discussion went on for over 6 hours. That is what gets me in trouble from a work perspective. I have to work on so many things and I have trouble working when I get into the OT, especially when we talk politics.

The Romans did not think they were better than everyone else. In fact, the genius of their system was its ability – like the US – to enlarge the meaning of what it meant to be “Roman”.
At its beginning, only those who lived in Rome could be considered “Roman”. Then it was enlarged to include the Italians. Finally, Roman citizenry was open to all in the empire.
Moreover, after the demise of the Julian/Augustun line of emperors in the first century, most emporers came from outside Rome, indeed, outside Italy.
“That was the path of the Roman Empire on down to Nazi Germany.”
There could be no greater difference than the reasons behind the demise of the Roman Empire, and that of Nazi Germany.
The Roman Empire collapsed from a widespread lack of belief in the fundamental values that made it great. This is the overarching theme of Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
Nazi Germany, on the other hand, was a non-democratic government fueled by a hyper-nationalistic craze. It had unchecked over-confidence in its greatness.
I’m back. Sorry, but I still believe that you both were putting words in my mouth. To argue that your version of American Exceptionalism includes the right to sometimes criticize US policy implies that I said otherwise. Anyway, the above debate with Legion shows the divide that exists. I think the American people will speak on the issue.
Bxgrl and Blowfish: I am resolved not to respond to ad hominen attacks. Have a good day.

These are different times, the memorial service is more like a pep rally.
