To anyone who is interested, and please pass it on, this came in our community bulletins for CHN, and applies to the whole city:
The Department of Sanitation is paying $14 – $18/hr to shovel snow & lay down salt. Go to the nearest sanitation depot with your ID. Call 311 for locations.
We’ve had plows down Lincoln Pl. but that has mostly destroyed the clearing that drivers had done earlier & they’re now again behind huge berms of snow that’s much heavier & denser.
I can’t speak to the LES, but I’ll blather on anyway and say that Chelsea/the photo district (20’s/6th) was walkable except for the intersections, which are predictably a lake of slush. Can’t imagine the LES would be any better, so would really really recommend some sort of waterproof foot-covering.
(my wife, who is super-pregnant, got some wooden clog things which she likes for the snow, though I think they seem crazy. Elevate you above most of the mush, and are easy to put on and apparently warm. She also has some of those Hunter rubber boots, but they’re too hard to get on/off at the moment (due mid-jan). Which is lucky for me, since that means I can wear them.)
yeah – so apparently no one shovels in williamsburg. i got to the train by walking in the middle of the street.
rob – Did you see MM’s post? There’s a Sanit Depot at 11th St & 2nd Av near Pathmark.

Bfarwell – wow congrats!!!
hmmm wooden clogs in this weather would scare me
I hated my hunter boots – they made my feet so hot and sweaty – ugh!!
Thanks, Arkady. They look super cozy!
Smart Wool socks work really well inside even flimsy boots. They’re expensive but worth it.
bfarwell – I’ve got hunter boots, too. But do you have the inserts? My toes are pretty cold.
