bho it just depends which part you call the crisis. I would call the ponzi scheme (& I agree with that characterization) the cause of the crisis, and the state of the banking system now the crisis
as far as allowing the correction, I agree with tough love for home owners, because they can all go rent and actually save money. but if we let the banks fail we will truly head back to the dust bowl days.
It’s not a crisis. It’s the correction of a crisis (government-backed Ponzi epidemic). We need to allow the correction, however tough that love may be.
That “subway kid” struck such a chord with my husband who along with his brother and sisters was born and raised in the LES and they did just that growing up. Besides, did you see the kid? He was more mature than most 21 yr. olds.
nothing wrong with a 9 year old taking the subway by themself. i used to take the bus from bergenline avenue in jersey to port authority around that age. (i thought it was a mega mall) hahahahah.
You know the old joke about “A & P” Catholics? They are the Catholics who only go to church on Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday because they get somethin’ for nuthin’. Sad, but true.
Biff, THL and MM;
Continuing on this point: did you see this article a while back?
This article really resonated with me because one of the most fun activities for me when I was a kid was riding the subway with my brothers and cousins who lived nearby. We were about 10, and our folks KNEW that we liked to take the subway, and pretend that we were great explorers going to the edge of the known world. We used to press our faces against the front window, hold on to the handle, pretend it was the train throttle, and we were the “Captains of thee Universe”
BTW: this woman caught hell after she published this piece, with all sorts of neurotic parents informing her that she was a despicable, neglectful mom. I say “Bully for her”!!
Biff, it is true that safety is a concern, but I don’t think that explains it all. For example, the suburb in which my brother lives is quite upscale and safe. I think it has more to do with an unhealthy anxiety about kids making their way in the world.

“we have a cataclysmic banking crisis going on”

joe,
If you read MarketWatch regularly, you will likely come to the same conclusion that I have: Irwin Kellner is full of bullcrap.
