  1. *rob*, what are the initials of your new dog walker? I had one who wanted to “train” CDog at 15-1/2 years old. She lectured me about what I let CDog get away with and said she would train her and break her of her bad habits. And I said, yeah, no you won’t. Then she gets down and gives CDog a big hug — which CDog normally loves — and CDog growled at her, and she never growls at anyone. So I quickly sent this woman on her way.

  2. Snappy, I know that RS says that. They may, but the government is still using the old tapes too. I really like the old rote, audio approach — i.e. get sentence patterns, with useful phrases and repeat them over and over again with changes in person, tenses, new vocabulary and constructions until you can start talking about certain things with no translation, no English intervention with no accent. Where you can just imitate the accent and intonation until you sound just like tape. This is a sort of physical way of learning I think. But I guess RS gets success, but I think the old way is better.

Rob, the magical age of language learning is up till age 7. The brain’s ability to hear and mimic many different sounds is extremely flexible. After we start speaking a language (or several languages) the brain starts being more selective about what it can easily process. But anyone can learn a language.

Some people — sounds like Bxgrl — might have a hard time hearing (related to being tone deaf, hearing certain sounds and being able to mimic them??). Not saying this is Bxgrl, but there are people who are extremely smart, can read, write, but what they speak only remotely sounds like the language. Also they might have a heard time hearing and differentiating the sounds. I think it is the same set of abilities needed for singing and mimicing.

  3. Count my daughter in, cobblesnaps. She has threatened that when she grows up she will buy a house in some painted lady neighborhood and one-up everyone with a bunch of neon paint and day-glo trim. I’m sure she’d be happy to temper that with glitter paint, and may even have some color ideas for you.
