Greetings from Chicago all (well, Oakbrook, actually, the home of McDonald’s)!
DIBS, last night I went to a steak house called Gibson’s, which is apparently a local favorite. Ever go there? Not bad for a moderately-priced steakhouse.
donatella, do you have a “room” underneath the stoop? After they chiseled off the outer stoop surface, we spent another $1,500 to point and coat the underside as well.
Dave, I hired your brownstone guy to thoroughly repair the stoop. He have me a pretty good price – 7,000 to do all levels of the stoop (three) and the sides and to rebrownstone the whole thing. That was the best price I got out of the “real” brownstone guys and your place looks great. He’ll start tomorrow.
ishtar, get a seat outside at Ruth Chris Steakhouse right by the canal and enjoy Waterfire exhibit that they have every summer. I think there is something going on this Saturday.
Yes, donatella. However, after we stripped off alll the old paint, both he and I decided that we would save as much of the original stone (about 80%) as it was in fine condition. That did result in a job that looks a bit patchy but far better in the long run.
I did have to have everything chipped out and restoned from the top of the stoop to ground level, both the stoop area and the portion around the garden level windows, as it had deteriorated a lot, as you can see from the pics.
He also cleaned and repainted my (wood) cornice. Most every one of my window sills and lintels needed to be rebuilt. he has an excellent mason able to recreate the rosette details quite well.
“Donatella, welcome to the world of spending money to be landed gentry owner of a brownstone!!!”
suckaz!!

dona, I’ll have andy say a little prayer to the virgin of guadelupe, if needed I can drop off a candle.
this is what my wife doesnt understand fully – amount of repairs with these old houses. the frustration (more than the $$$) is the issue

Schedule is at http://www.waterfire.org.
Also loads of good brunch places right around downtown area. You have to be more specific on type of food, price, atmosphere and I’ll recommend a few.
